  •  Thanks to the Sioux County Conservation Board and all the volunteers for putting on Outdoor Skills Day and all of the cleanup that has been done.

Western Iowa Deer Herd Meeting

Myself and a few other board members attended a meeting this week regarding the declining deer numbers in Western Iowa. There was a lot of information and ideas shared but I am going to focus on the things that applied to Sioux County. According to the biologist the reason for the decline is a combination of doe harvest and habitat loss. There is currently no regulations changed for Sioux County, however we as hunters may want to consider not harvesting as many does for the next couple of years to help the herd recover.

Awards

Congratulations to Henry Byl on receiving the Legendary Sportsmen Award.

Congratulations to Weston Hoogendoorn and Anaka Dekkers on earning the scholarships.

Be sure to encourage your kids to apply for the Scholarships, and also don’t forget to nominate anyone worthy of the legendary sportsmen award.

Happy New Year

I hope 2023 was a great year for all of you.  Hunting season is about to wrap up. I hope you all found success. Pheasant numbers seemed to be great. I hunted some of our public land last weekend and the number of birds we saw was fantastic. My deer season was definitely more downs than ups, but I guess that’s why they call it hunting and not shooting. I’ve heard mixed reports on deer numbers from hunters in the area. Numbers of mature deer seemed to be down in the area’s I have been hunting.  I think last winter was hard on the herd which is a good reminder of how important the habitat that we all have been working to preserve and increase is.

This year’s kids’ events were a great success. Be sure to encourage youth to attend these events, especially those who have not been introduced to the outdoors before!    Remember any kids that attend the banquet will be given a ticket to be entered into a special drawing at the Outdoor Skills Day. Odds are typically pretty good in that drawing.

  • Outdoor skills day was once again a ton of fun. It took a few days for my old dog to recover after spending an entire day retrieving for groups of 10-20 kids at the waterfowl station I led.  It’s always exciting to see kids get introduced to the outdoors especially the ones who have never had the opportunity before. If you are looking for a way to get involved while only giving up one day please reach out to me or Sunday Ford. I guarantee you will enjoy it as much as the kids!
  • I was unable to attend  Kids Fishing Day, but the board members who volunteered said there were lots of smiles and it was the first time catching fish for some of the atendees.
  •  Thanks to the Sioux County Conservation Board and all the volunteers for putting on these events.

Land Update

The tract of land adjoining Oak Grove that was purchased this spring is now open for hunting. Pheasant hunting on this tract is by reservation. You can make reservations online through Sioux County parks. We have couple of other tracts we are currently working on.

Thank YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR

Thanks to your support we were able to assist in the purchase of over 100 acres of now public hunting land again this year.

Greetings Sportsmen and Women!

This coming year, 2023, marks the 25th anniversary of the Sioux County Sportsmen’s Club.

This year’s kids’ events were a great success. Be sure to encourage youth to attend these events, especially those who have not been introduced to the outdoors before!    Any kids that attend the banquet will be given a ticket to be entered into a special drawing at the Outdoor Skills Day.

  • At the Outdoor Skills Day this year there were 280 people in attendance. It is awesome to see so many kids interested in wanting to learn different skills for the outdoors. For me the most exciting part of this event is introducing kids to hunting and fishing that have never been given the opportunity to do either before. This is a great event and we are always looking for volunteers.
  • Kids Fishing Day was a great day filled with lots of excitement and smiles. It’s hard to believe the smile that a small bluegill can put on the face of a first time fishermen. I can assure you that the money you donate for stocking fish is a worthy cause.
  •  Thanks to the Sioux County Conservation Board and all the volunteers for putting on these events.

Land Update

We have assisted in the purchase of two tracks of land this year. One adding to an existing area. The other includes a pit for fishing. We are constantly working to buy the next big piece and have been close several times.

Thank YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR

It is no secret that land prices are higher than ever, and with the support you have given and continue to give we feel like we are in a position where we can make a move when the right opportunity arises.

Banquet

Start making plans to attend the 26th annual banquet held again at the Dordt College Rec Center on March 4, 2023. Many new things are being planned for this years banquet including some awesome guns for prizes and a game just for fishermen. Invite your family, friends, co-workers, and date. Ticket package prices will remain the same but will include fewer tickets. Individual ticket prices have been adjusted accordingly. Proportionally if everyone spends the same amount of money, odds will remain the same. The reason for the change is the excessive amount of tickets that we have been dealing with, and we have received complaints about the number of tickets that need to be filled out when a magnum ticket package is purchased. Help us make this major fundraising event a huge success.

Grand Prizes include….

  • $1000 Joe’s Appliance Gift Card (OC)
  • Christensen Arms 28 Nosler
  • Windham Weaponry 6.5 Creedmoor
  • CZ Red Head Premier 12 GA. Over/ Under
  • Browning Silver Hunter 12 GA.
  • Magnum Research 500 JRH
  • $500 Cenex Gift Card
  • $500 Mills Fleet Farm Gift Card
  • $500 Scheels Gift Card
  • Stihl Battery  Combi Pack

Don’t miss out on getting your banquet tickets early!  Go to our website (www.siouxcsc.org) and click on the link in the upper right corner under BANQUET TICKETS to order them online. Easily pay with your credit card, or scan the QR code with your phone and it will take you to our website!

Thank YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR

2021 started out with much uncertainty we didn’t know if we would be able to have a banquet and had already had to cancel our Fall fundraiser in 2020. The Sioux County Sportsmen’s Club is certainly blessed with some very supportive members because as of today our fundraising for the year is at around $92,000, which I believe is a record year. The Banquet was late which brought attendance down, but the spending was not down. We did two 5-gun raffles as separate fundraisers, the second of which we will be drawing in the next 30 days. We plan to do a gun raffle again in 2022. Thanks to all who helped support the club this year. We hope to purchase some new land for all to enjoy very soon!

Greetings from the Board of Sioux County Sportmen’s Club.

Thank you to all the members, sponsors, businesses, volunteers and board members for supporting this organization so we can continue to help improve and expand on all of the wildlife areas in our county. With all of your support this will insure to our kids and generations to come the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

The SCSC board is finally able to get back to our regular routine we were in pre 2020. The upcoming banquet will be the 25th Annual Banquet. Plans for this special banquet are already underway. The date is not set at this time as we are talking with Dordt when spring break will be, sometime in March. Also Dordt Catering would like to tell all that they will be getting their prime rib from a different source. The board did meet with Dordt Catering to discuss the meal for upcoming banquets. The board was able to sample the new product they will be using. Excellent prime rib. Thank you to Dordt Catering for making the changes.  You will be able to get information about the banquet on our website and on our facebook page. Reminder for the banquet, we will be giving out two $500 scholarships again to students that will be going to college next school year and awarding the Legendary Sportsmen’s Award at our next banquet. These forms can be found on the SCSC website ( siouxcsc.org ).

 2021 SCSC Annual Banquet Information

 1. The SCSC banquet was held this year on May 22 at the Dordt Rec Center. It was definitely challenging for everyone this year to get this banquet held with all the other events going on at that time. Absolutely amazing.  This year the SCSC banquet raised right at $54,000. All of these proceeds stay in Sioux County to help with improvements to existing public ground and helping with land acquisition. A huge thank you to all who sponsored and attended the banquet.

2. Midwest Honor Flight. Again this year on the auction there was a handgun auctioned off with all the proceeds going to Midwest Honor Flight. With the auction and all the donations the total amount raised was $3,650.

3. The 25th annual banquet is coming up. There will be some nice changes and also game rule changes to existing games. This will be a special event. Stay informed on our website ( siouxscs.org ) and on our facebook page.

5 Gun Raffle – This spring SCSC and PF Chapter #36 held a 5 gun raffle selling 500 tickets at $50 a ticket. Tickets sold out almost immediately. This fund raising event raised around $19,000. This money raised goes into a separate fund that can potentially be doubled when used for land acquisition. Information on future fund raising events will be on our website and facebook pages.

Outdoor Skills Day – Outdoor Skills Day was held this year at Sandy Hollow on June 10. There were 10 different stations where the kids could attend to learn different outdoor skills. This is a large event with over 200 kids attending plus around 40 volunteers. After the event many prizes were handed out to the kids.  Thanks to all who attended and volunteered. Spread the word for next years event.

Family Fishing Clinic – The fishing clinic was held at Sandy Hollow on June 12. Around 70 kids participated in the different contests. Prizes were handed out to contest winners and everyone received a small prize. Once again watch for next years event and spread the word.

Land Acquisition – The Land Acquisition committee is working on several different parcels of land throughout Sioux County. Some of these would tie directly into existing public ground. There is some parcels that would be new locations in Sioux County with one being a very unique piece. Hopefully by the end of the year a couple of these pieces can be purchased and put into public use.

Amazon Smile

For everyone purchasing items on Amazon you can go to Amazon Smile (everything the same as Amazon) and purchase your items. The Sioux County Sportsmen’s Club is listed as a non profit organization under Amazon Smile. With every purchase you make and list SCSC as the non profit, 0.5% of each purchase will go to SCSC.  Keep this in mind for your next purchase.

Land Maps

A printable land map can be found on our website www.siouxcsc.org.

Land Update

There has just been more acres added to the Rock Wildlife Area.  The Sioux County Sportsmen’s Club helped with the purchase of 11.88 acres to this piece. This is the farm ground that jutted in the public on the south side of the old tracks.

There is a lot of discussion on multiple pieces that is and might be coming up for sale. Everyone who is involved with the land acquisition is working hard to see what can be done with these coming up. We appreciate all your support and ask for your continued support in these efforts.

The Sioux County Conservation did some stocking of ponds this year. Because of all the flooding the stocking was limited to just a few ponds. Sandy Hollow was stocked with perch, bluegill, catfish and crappie. The Floyd B Complex with catfish, bluegill and crappie and the Vande Weerd pit with catfish, bluegill and crappie. This was done with funding help from Sioux County Sportsmen’s Club.
